- The UAE University (UAEU) was established in 1976 by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan- may Allah have mercy on him- to be the first national institution of higher learning in the United Arab Emirates. The UAE University constantly strives for excellence and aims at fulfilling the aspirations of the nation by working within the national agenda to meet the needs of UAE society and those of the global community in terms of teaching, scientific research and community service. The University aspires to be one of the top academic institutions and pays great attention to innovation, leadership and creativity.

Important Dates and Achievements
- In 1977, UAEU began with four Colleges, namely: The College of Humanities and Social Sciences, known then as the Faculty of Arts, the College of Science, the College of Education, and the College of Business and Economics, known then as the Faculty of Administrative and Political Sciences
- In 1978, the College of Shari’ah and Law was established.
- In 1980, the College of Agricultural Sciences and the College of Engineering were established.
- In 1981, UAEU graduated its first cohort of students, which included 192 male students and 50 female students, many of whom currently occupy key positions in governmental and non-governmental organizations across the country.
- In 1986, the College of Medicine and Health Sciences was established in the aim of improving medical services in the UAE, reducing dependence on expatriate physicians as well as launching a research program that is relevant to the needs of the country. Today, the College of Medicine and Health Sciences is ranked among the top medical schools in the Middle East.
- The first Master’s Degree Program was established in the Faculty of Sciences in 1991. It is an interdisciplinary program in Environmental Sciences.
- In 1998 the College of Engineering received ABET accreditation and the university established the Continuing Education Center as another means of serving the community.
- In 1999, The College of Business and Economics received AACSB accreditation.
- In 2000, the university established the Faculty of Information Technology and the Research Affairs Unit to manage and promote scientific research.
- In 2003, English became the language of instruction.
- In 2006, UAEU was ranked among the top 10 research universities in the Islamic world by the SESRTCIC, OIC Research Center and ‘Smart Classrooms’ were introduced.
- In, 2007 the College of Medicine and Health Sciences received the Hamdan Award for Best Medical College in the Arab World.
- In 2008, UAEU was chosen by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) to be the second overseas venue for examinations in the Faculty of Occupational Medicine.
- In 2009 the first Ph.D. program was established.
- In 2010 the university moved to a new state-of-the-art campus situated in the city of Al Ain. The 80 hectare campus is a showcase of modern architecture, and includes high-tech laboratories, specialized research centers, cutting-edge IT infrastructure and smart classrooms.
- In 2011, UAEU was ranked 338 in the QS World University rankings, which is the highest ranking to date. The College of IT received ABET accreditation in the same year.
- In 2012 Mobile learning was introduced and UAEU was ranked in the top 50 world universities that were founded within the past 50 years (QS World University Rankings).
- In 2013 University College was established. It includes three programs: The University Foundation Program; the Student Academic Success Program and the General Education Program. These programs assist students with the transition from high school to university, enhance student engagement, integrate academic and co-curricular programs, connect students with resources and foster both independent and lifelong learning.
- In 2014, UAEU received institutional accreditation from the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
- In 2016 UAEU received international institutional accreditation from the WASC (Senior College and University Commission WSCUC).
- In 2017 UAEU was the highest-ranked university in the United Arab Emirates and was also ranked as one of the top five universities in the Arab world and #390 worldwide as per the QS World University Ranking.
- UAEU continues its efforts to become one of the best universities in the world. QS, a London-based international ranking of the world’s leading universities, rates UAEU in the top 500 in the world in terms of education and scientific research. QS also includes UAEU on its list of the top 50 world universities that have been founded within the past 50 years.
- UAEU provides the support needed to ensure student success, which includes numerous services such as counseling, medical care, IT technical support, help for special needs students, functional services, financial assistance, international students services, alumni services, Student Success Center and Student Union.
- The new UAEU campus features the most modern architecture and includes zones for specialized research centers, cutting edge IT network infrastructure, classrooms and labs that feature the latest equipment and instructional technology to enhance student learning. The campus also boasts an expansive library offering a vast collection of printed publications and electronic resources, two world class health clubs equipped with latest fitness equipment, two Olympic-sized swimming pools, as well as tennis, basketball, and badminton courts among other facilities.
- UAEU is the nation’s premier research university. We not only transmit knowledge to our students, but through our colleges and research centers we help to create new knowledge, work on developing new treatments for cancer, produce new technology for addressing the world’s energy needs and develop new techniques for increasing the global food supply. Each year our historians and archaeologists help to discover and assess historical artifacts concerning the accomplishments and culture of the people from this part of the world. UAEU students also have the opportunity to work side by side with internationally known research faculty on many research projects.
- UAEU is one of the top universities in the UAE that offer a multitude of academic choices. The university offers 52 Bachelor’s degree programs, 37 Master’s programs, a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree, a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree, a Ph.D. program, and a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree across a broad range of disciplines, including business, economics, education, engineering, food and agriculture, humanities, social sciences, IT, law, medicine and health sciences, and natural sciences. Many of the available degree programs are unique to UAEU, and many of them are offered in unique combinations. Whatever the students’ interests, talents, and goals, UAEU has a program to match.
- In 2013, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research assigned the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA) with the responsibility of regular institutional accreditation of the public tertiary institutions in the UAE, in addition to its role in licensing of private institutions operating in the UAE.
- UAEU achieved institutional accreditation on 31 March 2014, and this accreditation status extends for 5 years.
- Institutional accreditation acknowledges the mission of the University in the field of higher education. It also stresses that the university possesses a good administrative structure in terms of laws, bylaws, policies, procedures, physical and financial resources, academic programs, faculty members as well as other staff and meets the requirements of quality education.
- In addition to institutional accreditation, many of the scientific programs at UAEU are accredited by international professional organizations such as ABET and AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business).
