The Theatrical Association commemorated the Emirati Theatre Day at the Cultural Palace in Sharjah on July 2. The celebration was timed to coincide with the birthday of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.
The event aims to highlight the pivotal role of this cultural art form in shaping the hopes and aspirations of humanity. It serves as a tribute to His Highness Sheikh Sultan’s immense support for theatre, playwrights, and intellectuals.
Ismail Abdullah, Secretary-General of the Arab Theatre Authority and Chairman of the Emirati Theatrical Association, stated that His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qasimi has developed fundamental strategies for the theatrical work. He has been a pioneer with his innovative ideas and passion for the development and future of theatre. His Highness’s support and supervision have been instrumental not only locally but also across the Gulf, Arab and international scales.
Abdullah emphasized that His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah has been a dedicated patron of theatre, recognizing the crucial importance of cultural investment in people, especially in the realm of theatre. Sheikh Sultan’s vision has elevated theatre to an intellectual beacon, embodying the values of patriotism, Arab identity and humanity.
Abdullah underlined that the philosophy behind Emirati Theatre Day is to make it a day of reflection and development, viewing theatre as an interactive and dynamic entity that embodies all aspects of creativity and innovation.
“We look forward to the second anniversary to become a significant cultural event, deriving its uniqueness from this day, celebrated by theatre enthusiasts as an Emirati day inspired by the vibrant Arab presence in our theatrical life. I view this day as a wave of gratitude to the pioneers who believed in theatre, nurturing its seeds with pure knowledge and skills,” he added.
Abdullah praised the efforts of numerous Emirati, Gulf and Arab pioneers, who significantly contributed to the development of Emirati theatre. He highlighted their beginnings, the challenges they faced, and their early creativity. He also acknowledged the role of Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, who elevated the presence of Emirati theatre on the Arab stage and expanded its reach.
In conclusion, the Association’s Chairman said, “This achievement is a testament to the efforts of the pioneers, their dedication, and their blessed endeavors. Today, we reap the fruits of their hard work and efforts, soaring in the Arab and Gulf theatre space. This day represents both the culmination of past struggles and hopes, and an inspiration for a future befitting the UAE and its people.”
The Association also honored historian and playwright Obaid Bin Sandal, Saeed Boumian, stage actor, playwright and theatre director, as well as Dr. Saeed Al Haddad, a researcher in theatrical and heritage affairs.
The Association awarded its prize winners in its fourth edition for the overall achievements of theatre troupes in 2023-2024. The award was shared equally between the Sharjah National Theatre Troupe and the Umm Al Quwain National Theatre Troupe.
Additionally, the Chairman and members of the Theatrical Association honored several outstanding theatre troupes from the past year, along with artists, directors, and playwrights who received accolades at local, GCC and Arab festivals.
