Diriyah selected as the Capital of Arab Culture for 2030

According to the official Saudi Press Agency, the Arab League’s Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organisation (ALECSO) has selected the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Diriyah as the Capital of Arab Culture for 2030.

Following their annual meeting, the Arab Ministers of Culture picked Diriyah. ALECSO is a Tunis-based specialised institution and the meeting was held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The permanent committee of the organisation for culture backed the vote to make Diriyah the Capital of Arab Culture for 2030. This is the second Saudi Arabian city to receive the honour — Riyadh was chosen for the same accolade in 2000, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

“Due to its immortal symbolism at the level of culture locally and regionally, and its remarkable history with a civilised legacy that is still influential today,” said the press agency citing the reasoning behind the decision.

The Diriyah Gate Development Authority, is currently working to make the town one of the major hubs of global cultural tourism destination. It is one of the important projects that the Kingdom is undertaking.

The selection will culminate in a variety of events that will encompass art workshops, theatre, cinema, special performances, competitions, cultural weeks and more.

Saudi Arabia has ambitious plans for Diriyah Square, which will see in excess of 450 global brands partake in the celebrations.

Diriyah is a town located on the outskirts of Riyadh and was the original home of the Saudi royal family.
