The sixth edition of the Al Ain International Film Festival (AIFF), centered around the theme “Cinema for the Environment,” is scheduled to take place from February 4 to 8, 2024. During this event, a curated selection of noteworthy local, Gulf, Arab, and international films will be showcased in Al Ain.
The organizers of AIFF 2024 have revealed plans for numerous initiatives, programs, and workshops as integral components of this year’s edition, in their endeavours to further the festival’s commitment to nurturing and promoting the cinematic arts.
The 2024 edition of AIFF will honour Emirati actor Marie Al Halyan and filmmaker Abdul Hamid Juma for their outstanding contributions to the cultural and artistic landscape, as well as their significant impact on the advancement of the film industry.
This year’s festival has drawn attention to a diverse array of films across various competitions, with a notable focus on the “Falcon GCC Feature Film Competition”. Competing for the grand prize are several compelling feature films, including UAE productions such as “Dalma” by Humaid Al Suwaidi, “Three” by Naila Al Khaja, and “The Caravan Moves On” by Saleh Karama Al Ameri. The Kuwaiti film “The Cocoon,” directed by Ahmed Al Terkait, is also among the noteworthy contestants.
In the “Falcon Emirati Short Film Competition,” a selection of nine films will take center stage, featuring noteworthy films, including “A Prayer of Hope” directed by Hamad Al Hammadi, “The Tiger” by Sultan Bin Dafoon, and “Tomorrow’s Dialogue: An Interview with Mr. Plastic” directed by Yasser Al Neyadi.
The “Falcon GCC Short Film Competition” boasts an impressive lineup of 11 competing films, while the “Falcon Resident Film Competition” will feature screenings of 13 outstanding films. Additionally, the Al Ain Film Festival will present a curated selection of some of the world’s most notable films, including several that have garnered Oscar nominations, as part of the “Falcon International Feature Film Competition”.
The Al Ain International Film Festival’s sixth edition proudly adopts the slogan “Cinema for the Environment,” reflecting an essential human need. Cinema, as the alternate face of humanity, carries significant responsibilities in conveying inspiring messages. This year’s theme aligns with the global commitment to environmental preservation, making the Al Ain Film Festival a participant in the worldwide cinematic journey addressing the concerns of humanity. The festival introduces a dedicated program showcasing a selection of the most crucial local, Arab, and international environmental films.”
Amer Salmeen Al Murry, President and Artistic Director of AIFF, expressed that the festival will remain the most prominent platform for celebrating both veteran filmmakers and young talents in the region. Film enthusiasts in the region eagerly anticipate several days immersed in the love of cinema during the festival, following its remarkable success over the past five years. Al Murry highlighted that the festival has managed to strengthen its presence and attract the best Emirati, Arab and international films, ensuring its ongoing success.
He emphasised that this year’s edition continues to build on the success of previous editions by introducing diverse programs. Al Murry highlighted that the introduction of the “Green Cinema” program following the UAE’s hosting of COP28. The program aims to present an inspiring cinematic vision to instil climate and environmental values among young people.
It features long and short documentary films from around the world to raise awareness about climate change and environmental responsibility. The selected films also actively promote the concept of sustainability and the preservation of oceans and planet Earth.
