The Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Foundation hosted a lecture and book signing event for “Nasheej Al-Doduk” (The Duduk’s Whimper), a memoir penned by novelist Jalal Barjas, at its Stand at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF) on Wednesday, May 1, 2024.

In his memoir, Jalal Barjas recounts his literary journey, weaving together a narrative that takes him to various locales guided by three influential books. For instance, while in London, he draws inspiration from Tayeb Salih’s “Season of Migration to the North”, while in Paris, Albert Camus’s “The Stranger” informs his exploration, and during his visit to Yerevan, Armenia, Rasul Gamzatov’s “My Dagestan: Baladi” serves as a companion.

The book signing ceremony drew a gathering of writers, intellectuals, and public figures, where Barjas delved into the significance of weaving an early autobiography as a novelist, revealing facets of his persona through a captivating intersection of his narrative, the essence of three cities he traversed, and the influence of three accompanying books during his travels, all conveyed in a rich, engaging, and profound prose.

The session, characterized by its intimate ambiance, sparked cultural dialogues intertwined with insights into the urban landscapes depicted in the works of authors like Naguib Mahfouz, Marquez, and others whose novels vividly portray the essence of city life.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, Jalal Barjas expressed his gratitude to the Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Foundation, highlighting the credibility of the awards bestowed by the Foundation and its pivotal role in advancing the status of Arab culture.

Following his remarks, Barjas signed numerous copies of his book for the attendees, ensuring that each book bore a unique artistic signature that added a touch of beauty to the appreciative sentiments he inscribed on every reader’s copy.
