The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm has announced on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, that three scientists have jointly won this year’s Nobel Prize in physics, namely French scientist Alain Aspect, American scientist John F. Clauser and Austrian scientist Anton Zeilinger for their work on quantum information science.
The Nobel Prize Committee said the three scientists were awarded the prize in recognition of their “pioneering quantum information science.”
Alain Aspect, John Clauser and Anton Zeilinger have each conducted groundbreaking experiments using entangled quantum states.
The trio’s work focuses on quantum entanglement, a process in which two or more quantum particles are coupled so that any change in one particle will lead to a simultaneous change in the other, even if they are separated by vast, even infinite, distances.
This effect gives quantum computers the ability to perform multiple calculations simultaneously, exponentially boosting their processing power over those of conventional devices.
According to the Nobel committee: “Quantum information science is a vibrant and rapidly developing field. It has broad and potential implications in areas such as secure information transfer, quantum computing and sensing technology.”
The work of the three scientists- who had worked separately- has contributed to developing theories that had been first introduced by other scientist such as Albert Einstein.
It is worth mentioning that French scientist Alain Aspect (75 years) is a Professor at Université Paris-Saclay and École Polytechnique, Palaiseau, in France, while American scientist John F. Clauser (79 years) is a physicist at J.F. Clauser & Associates in the US and Austrian scientist Anton Zeilinger (77 years) is a Professor at the University of Vienna in Austria,
The prizes carry a cash award of 10 million Swedish kronor (nearly $920,000) in each category and will be handed out on Dec. 10. If there is more than one winner in each category the monetary prize shall be divided amongst them.
The winner/s of the Nobel Prize for chemistry on Wednesday and the literature prize will be announced on Thursday. The 2022 Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday and the economics award on October 10.
